Food intolerances
The term, food intolerances, covers a range of non-allergic reactions to food. In a food intolerance, the body has partially or totally lost the ability to digest a certain substance – or has never been able to do so.
Food intolerance
Possible signs of an intolerance include diarrhoea, abdominal pain and flatulence.
Lactose intolerance
One in five people here in Switzerland suffer from lactose intolerance. It is caused by the lack of an enzyme in the digestive tract.
Fructose malabsorption
Unlike the less common congenital fructose intolerance, fructose malabsorption involves the reduced absorption of fruit sugar (fructose) into the cells of the small intestine, leading to symptoms such as flatulence, abdominal pain and diarrhoea.
Coeliac disease (gluten intolerance)
Coeliac disease, or gluten intolerance, is an autoimmune reaction to gluten, a constituent of various cereal grains.
Histamine intolerance
People with histamine intolerance are unable to break down endogenous histamine and histamine supplied through diet to a sufficient extent.
